ALDERSHOT TOWN SUPPORTERS SOCIETY LIMITED – The Shots Trust

Minutes of the meeting of Board of Directors

Brewer’s Fayre

16th September 2020, 19:00

Attendees: Tom Anderson (TA), Michael Foster (MF), Laura Smart (LS).

  1. Apologies for Absence

Alan Hilliar (AH), Sean Chambers (SC), Nick Bond (NB).

  1. Approval of minutes of last meeting

The minutes were approved.

  1. Review of previous actions

Of the 17 actions carried forward from July, 9 were completed, 3 cancelled and 5 are carried forward.

  1. Financial Report

LS reported that she would in future combine the Financial Report and the Fundraising sections; now that she manages both, the split is no longer sensible as the discussions invariably straddle both.

The account balances remain healthy, as do the membership and CFS numbers; both in fact are growing.

TA reported that Lucky 7s has started up again and has increased its player numbers to 109.

Chairman’s Update

The Rushmoor Borough Council (RBC) presentation:

On 3rd September, three Trust Board members made a presentation to the RBC about the lease extension. It went well; we were thanked and told that the points we raised will be put to the councillor leading on the redevelopment and regeneration of Aldershot, Mr Martin Tennant.

On a less positive note, several councillors took the opportunity to question us, at some length, about the accusation of racism made against a Board member back in December 2019.

Although subsequent discussions are confidential, the Board member has reluctantly taken the decision that, in order to draw a line under this very unfortunate incident, he should offer his resignation from the Board. His resignation has been accepted.

Trust advisor role:

TA reported that Brian Bloomfield has expressed an interest in acting as an Advisor to the Trust Board.  This is an extremely welcome development, given Mr Bloomfield’s considerable knowledge of the Club and experience of the Trust itself. TA will pursue further discussions with Mr Bloomfield, to agree the parameters of his new role.

A competitor’s approach to TA:

TA reported that he had been approached on 26th August by the Chairman of a non-league Club, who was keen for him to join their management board.  TA met the Chairman for talks on 12th September, and enjoyed their hospitality for the afternoon.  He is considering his next steps.

Sunday League Team (SLT): TA reported all players and the management team had tested negative for Covid-19 and could resume playing in the league.  The first game of our season will commence this weekend, on 20th September. BFBS are doing a feature on the team on Monday 21st September; wider media are unable to attend at this stage but will be involved at a later date.  We will be producing a promotional video before the game, and hope to see as many Shots fans attend as possible.

Post meeting note: the video was well received. 62 supporters attended on the day, and….WE WON!! 5 – 2 on our first league outing.

  1. AOB
  • Easy Fundraising: LS has shared the Easy Fundraising link on the Shots Trust website; this is a wonderful way for supporters to raise funds at absolutely no cost to themselves..
  • Member benefits: after discussions, we identified a further number of venues that we intend to approach with regard to offering discounts to Trust members. LS will publish an article listing the new membership benefits in the coming week.

Post meeting note: Mike Pusey has decided to step down from his position as Honorary President of the Trust. Mike has served with us since 2017, following the death of Frank Burt at the grand old age of 102! Mike continues to act in his capacity as Chaplain to the Club and will always be a friend to the Trust.  We wish him all the best.

Meeting conclusion:              20:45

Date of Next Meeting:           21st October, Brewer’s Fayre
